Workshops

I will be conducting three workshops at Inverness Creative Academy on 29th, 30th and 31st July. All three do work well as a continuum – on the first day creating some printed samples which could echomoy own practice by moving on into day two incorporating into collage and stitch and then moving into day three with some further textiles techniques. Each workshop can also be booked as a one day stand alone workshop as each focuses quite specifically on one area.

The cost per day is £70, however if two days are booked, the cost is £60 per day or three days would be £55 per day. Iif you have any queries, or would like to book a place, please contact me through my contact page.

Ecoprinting Workshop Itinerary

  • 10am – introduction, showing examples, introduction to the process and an explanation of the chemical reactions happening. Each person will have their own back which contains all the things required for the workshop and written information to take away so that participants can go away able to undertake the process at home.
  • 11am – Initially, we will do some printing with paper and explore the various types of foliage which has good printing properties. Paper samples will be placed in pots and will be left to steam in the background for 1.5 hours.
  • 11. 30 – 11.45am tea break
  • 11.45 – Explanation of protein fabrics and the differences when printing with protein based fabrics or cellulose (plant) based fabrics. Demo of laying leaves and rolling the fabric ‘bundles’. Participants will roll and tie bundles and will put into steamers/ pots depending on preferences. There will be a silk sample and a fine ‘etamine de laine’ wool fabric length which will be 25 cm x 170cm which is a good scarf length.
  • This should take us to around 1.30pm. We will have a half hour lunch break which will take us to 2pm.
  • At 2 pm we can remove our paper based samples and have the reveal on those.
  • From here, we will do some further sampling with tiles, paper and fabric sandwiched into the tiles. This will be more focused on participants’ personal choices for experimentation.
  • 3pm – unravelling and revealing the fabric samples which is always the most exciting part! Also unravelling any further tile based samples.
  • Final laying out of work, discussing, answering questions, etc.
  • Participants will leave with lots of information in the form of printed handouts to enable home printing and will of course have access to my support on any further questions as they arise at home.

One day Hand Embroidery and Collage Workshop (with machines available as an option for mark making with stitch)

This Workshop is an introduction to creating a fine art piece of collaged embroidery. We will explore composition, applique with bondaweb, layering, possibly including found objects and fabric collage to create a single piece. The visual subject explored could be landscape, however that is flexible as often participants will arrive with a preferred subject. A photo as a visual reference to work from would be a good start point for participants to have ready to work from on the day.

Schedule

10am -Demo and discussion on the different ways that bondaweb can be manipulated, contrasting surfaces and overlaying. Piece can be constructed as more of a long thin rectangular hanging or more of a standard landscape dimention piece, etc. examples of work will be there to observe.

10.30 to 11am, individual sampling with some initial stitch and overlay suggestions

11.30ish – Teabreak

12am -1pm – further sampling and mark making with bondaweb. Applying of contrasting fabrics. Upworking samples – optional use of found objects

1-2pm – lunchbreak

2-4pm – construction of final work with positioning and layering. Option to add in found objects such as driftwood, rusty parts, etc. focus on composition and layer building.  Hand and machine embroidery building. Exploring various techniques such as couching and fraying

Some works will be completed, however the hope is that participants will have a started and worked piece which can be taken home and worked independently with a more intricate building of embroidered layers. I want the participants to feel that they have their own personal touch to the work and are confident with their own direction with the process.

Finish 4pm

Experimenting with Bonding, Fusing, Melting and Dissolvables

Morning  10am start

  • Introduction and showing samples, discussing techniques and materials
  • Demonstration of different techniques with dissolvable fabrics

(Flat, 3D, using contrasts and open areas, free machine, Angelina fibre, wire, etc.)

  • Participants experimentation with dissolvables, mesh and various fibres

Afternoon 2pm

  • Demonstrating heat tool, melting netting, using soldering tool, mark making with bondaweb and foiling with bondaweb
  • Participants experimentation with above
  • Participants can then move on to further experimentation with whichever method they are most drawn to.
  • Participants working over two or three days will most likely be merging works into a collage based piece or pieces.
